Water4Dogs Rehabiliation Center

Water4DogsWe’re fortunate to have some amazing services in our local community. One of them is Water4Dogs Rehabilitation Center on 77 Worth Street. Water4Dogs individually tailors plans for your pet–including multiple modalities such as hydrotherapy, physical therapy and acupuncture. It is a very effective way to address physical conditioning and rehabilitation challenges.

Water 4 DogsDowntown Dog members, Geraldine, Conor and their dog Abe, had a great experience at Water4Dogs. At the time, Abe sadly had a partial tear in his back left leg. After hearing from an orthopedic surgeon that he needed very invasive surgery, they sought out some other opinions. Since he was only a year and 9 months, they thought the surgery was a bit drastic. Another vet recommended water therapy and rehab at Water4Dogs.

They came in for an initial evaluation/consultation with Dr. Block at Water4Dogs and determined to try out their rehabilitation in lieu of surgery. After ten sessions of cold laser treatment, physical therapy, water treadmill and pool therapy (ten sessions in all, twice a week). Abe made an amazing recovery.

Unfortunately, Abe got the same injury in his other leg. They have now come to realize that this particular injury is very common in his breed. They decided to try the same course of treatment at Water4Dogs and after only three sessions, Abe has again massively improved.

To quote Geraldine, “All the staff there are wonderful and the water therapists John, Jean Marie and Jennifer are all attentive, sensitive and very fond of Abe. Dr. Block, the supervising vet, is wonderful. We know we are in great hands there!”

Photos from DDogNYC Clean-up at Battery Park

This morning we had a very successful Downtown Dog NYC clean up at the Large Lawn in Battery Park! Loads of people and dogs came out to enjoy the beautiful morning and help clean up the park. We even filled up a few holes in the lawn. Here are some pics of the event (mostly post clean-up):

Dog Taxis and Transport

taxiUnfortunately, NYC taxis often will not pick up an owner and their dog, especially if you have a big dog. So we’ve put together a list of potential dog taxis and transport options. Some of them can be a bit pricey, so if you’re a member of Zipcar, that might be a better option depending on where you’re going.

Canine Car Service (Alice): 646-641-2271
Tim’s Pet Minivan: 917-449-6610
Pet Chauffeur: 212-696-9744
Pet Taxi (Pete): 212-755-1757 or mobile 917-642-8751

We’ll continue to update the list. You can find it on our Dog Services & Shops section. Feel free to send us any other local dog services you think would be helpful for our community.

NYer of the Week Maintains Dog Run Inside Manhattan Park

In a corner of J. Hood Wright Park in Washington Heights, you will find a little getaway for dogs. It’s also where you’ll likely find the latest New Yorker of the Week: retired electrician Tony Speranza, who doesn’t get paid to maintain a dog run inside J. Hood Wright Park, but he does whatever it takes to keep things running. “It means the world to me,” he says. “It means that the dogs in the neighborhood, my dogs, can run around, get recreation and play with each other, and basically be a dog for an hour a day.”

Local Dog Owners Clean Up Park

clean up parkSaturday March 15th, local residents and dog owners on behalf of DowntownDog NYC rallied to do a good deed for the community, by “digging” in, and picking up trash and garbage scattered about the Battery Lawn in Battery Park. The dog “officials” were in full “pack” mode, running about, overseeing the entire event “barking” out their commands, as the owners toiled on. The event was a BIG success as witnessed by the numerous bags of garbage collected and disposed of. Thank you to the DowntownDog NYC volunteers, who helped make this happen!
